On Fry’s English Delight on Radio 4 today, I describe to comedian Stephen Fry how much can be explained in something that seems impossibly brief. Introducing the Internet meme.

One liner-machine Tim Vine joins Stephen in the studio to discuss his affinity with brevity and ‘his passion for small hand grenades of wit’ as one reviewer put it. He describes the liberation of the bite-size joke and reflects on why he would make the perfect headline writer.
‘The pun is the life blood of the headline’ according to Kelvin Mackenzie who recalls the origins of his famous headline from the 1980s – ‘Gotcha’ and reflects on the importance of short words for any tabloid newspaper editor. Laura Barton, writer for the Guardian, explores her love of short writing and of neologisms in pop lyrics. If ‘la la’ means ‘I love you’ and ‘wop-bop-a-loop-a’ was an expression which captured the freedom of 50s rock and roll, what short word sums up the world today?
Alex Krotoski chooses the word ‘Meme’ and examines the way technology has given us the means to create ever smaller bespoke packages of information. And more of them. The chopped up doesn’t necessarily mean the dumbed down.

Having lived in Japan for 17 years, I learned to appreciate the impact of haiku expressed with such brevity, but I recognize that the four-character–combinations of Chinese sayings are superior in conveying entire philosophies. My Korean wife from China often quotes them to me whenever an appropriate situation presents itself. Most recently, I remember her cautioning me, saying, “Don’t be a big monk in a little temple,” when I switched from being a managing editor in a large office to a mere ESL tutor in a tiny private school after having been made redundant (‘laid-off’ in North American English).
I’m glad, though, that one of the guests on the programme pointed out that haiku in Japanese should really be closer to 12 syllables in English, rather than the traditional 17 as in Japanese. Chinese haiku would similarly have to be limited to about 6 syllables to embody the same brevity.
Brevity is over rated.
